THE GOTHAMIST INTERVIEW: DEC. DAY 1 – MAX MAKOWSKI

2005_12_12maxmakowskiBusy busy busy, primarily because of a nearly vegetative state in which I found myself this weekend, especially yesterday. And lo and behold, this is Lily’s and my week to produce Gothamist Interviews. Today’s is Writer/Director Max Makowski, who’s latest film One Last Dance will premiere at Sundance next month. Max actually considers himself a Hong Kong filmmaker, and for good reason — he mostly lives there, he mostly works within Hong Kong’s film industry, and One Last Dance is in Cantonese, even though Max doesn’t fluently speak the language himself. He does however spend a lot of time in New York, and when he’s here, he lives in Chinatown. Don’t hide it … you were curious!

  1. And to clarify, what I meant was “how did he come across DURING the interview”. Either when you met or had the phone call.

  2. Actually, it was neither. It was via email, and he corresponded with my interview partner Lily. Our interviews occur through a variety of ways. MOre recently, they’ve usually been on the phone, but we often do them by email. Lily or I take the lead on any one subject and come up with a list of questions which we then run by the other person who edits/adds/deletes from the question set. Then it gets sent to the other person (unless it’s a phone interview in which case we just work from that question set during the conversation). Then we edit together and post.
The only thing I can say as to how Max came across is that he answered the questions and returned the email in something like less than 12 hours which was a new record for us. Lily had to email him back with a couple brief follow-ups, but still. He was very accommodating.

  3. It sounds like the email way of interviewing lets the subject of the questions answer more freely. Since they have control.
As for Max, I guess a speedy reply could be considered a virtue… well sort of.
    Thank you for the reply.
